The full name of EPS is Electronic Power Steering, also known as Electronic Power Steering, which uses the power generated by an electric motor to assist drivers in power steering. The steering system, as an important component of the entire vehicle, is one of the key systems that affect the handling stability, comfort, and driving safety of the vehicle.
In the design of the steering system, in order to alleviate the contradiction between vehicle steering portability and steering sensitivity, most commercial vehicles and 50% of sedans use power steering systems. Since the 1950s, the power steering system has gone through three development stages: conventional hydraulic power steering system (HPS), electro-hydraulic power steering system (EHPS), and electric power steering system (EPS), and there is a trend towards electronic and intelligent development.
From a global perspective, the EPS loading rate of automobiles has exceeded 50%. About 63% of cars in China use HPS for passenger use, and about 35% use EPS. However, the EPS loading rate of domestic brand cars in China is only about 20%, indicating great potential for future development. Since 2015, China has surpassed Europe, America, and Japan to become the world's largest EPS market.
Composition of EPS system
On the basis of traditional mechanical steering systems, the EPS electronic power steering system utilizes electronic control devices to generate auxiliary power of corresponding size and direction from the electric motor based on torque signals on the steering wheel and vehicle speed signals, assisting the driver in steering operations. It can easily provide different assistance effects to the electric motor at different speeds, ensuring that the car is light and flexible when turning at low speeds, has sufficient road feel when turning at high speeds, and is stable and reliable.
Although the structural components of different cars are different, the structure of the EPS system is generally the same. It is generally composed of a torque (steering) sensor, electronic control unit, electric motor, reducer, mechanical steering gear, and battery power supply.
